SPFHS Alumni Help Create New Outdoor Courtyard Space

Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School students returned this fall to a refreshed courtyard made possible by the generosity of two alumni, Joe Mortarulo and John "Skip" Brandli, both members of the Class of 1988.

The alumni donated 40 picnic tables, creating an outdoor gathering space that can seat approximately 240 students at a time. The new arrangement gives the school an opportunity to pilot outdoor lunch periods and provides a flexible setting for class sessions and other school activities when weather permits.

Mortarulo, a member of the high school's first state championship soccer team in 1987, later coached soccer at SPFHS for 25 years before coaching at Rutgers University. Brandli was a multi-sport athlete at the high school and later graduated from Northeastern University's business school.

The two alumni, who are also the owners of Darby Road in Scotch Plains, made the contribution after hosting World Cup watch parties. Principal Dr. Warren Hynes said the tables create a welcoming outdoor setting where students can eat lunch, socialize and spend time outside during the school day.
